How to Write SEO Product Descriptions for Shopify

2 min read

An SEO product description does two jobs: it ranks for the terms shoppers search, and it convinces them to buy once they arrive. Here's how to do both — without keyword stuffing.

Start with keyword research

For each product (or product type), find the words customers actually use:

  • Use Shopify search terms, Google autocomplete, and "people also search for".
  • Prefer specific, intent-rich terms ("merino wool running socks") over vague ones ("comfortable socks").
  • Note one primary term and a couple of secondary terms.

Place keywords naturally

  1. Put the primary term in the first sentence.
  2. Use it again once or twice in the body — only where it reads naturally.
  3. Work secondary terms into benefits and specs.

If a sentence reads worse with the keyword in it, leave it out. Search engines are good at understanding meaning; stuffing now hurts more than it helps.

Structure for both readers and crawlers

  • A hook that names the customer outcome
  • A short context paragraph
  • A bulleted list of benefits and key specs
  • A closing reassurance line

Skimmable structure helps shoppers convert and helps crawlers understand the page.

Don't forget the other fields

The description isn't the whole page. Pair it with a keyword-led meta title and meta description, image alt text, and relevant tags. These often move rankings more than the body copy.

Uniqueness is non-negotiable

Never reuse supplier copy. Duplicate descriptions are the most common reason product pages fail to rank.

Scale it without losing quality

Doing all of this by hand across a catalog is the real challenge. The AI Product Description Generator can take your products and target terms and generate unique, keyword-aware descriptions plus the matching meta fields and alt text — in bulk, in your brand voice. Review, then publish.
