How to Bulk Edit Product Descriptions in Shopify
2 min read
Editing product descriptions one at a time does not scale. If you have hundreds or thousands of products, you need to edit in bulk. There are three practical ways to do it in Shopify — here's each, with the trade-offs.
Option 1: Shopify's built-in bulk editor
From Products, select the products you want, then choose Edit products. Shopify opens a spreadsheet-style grid where you can add the Description column and edit inline.
- Good for: quick edits to a handful of products, or pasting copy you already wrote.
- Limits: you still have to write every description yourself, and the inline editor is awkward for long, formatted HTML.
Option 2: CSV export and import
Export your products to CSV, edit the Body (HTML) column in a spreadsheet, then re-import.
- Good for: large find-and-replace style changes, or working offline.
- Limits: fragile — a malformed CSV can overwrite the wrong fields. And it still doesn't write the descriptions for you.
Option 3: AI bulk generation (the fast path)
The first two options move text around. They don't solve the real problem: someone still has to write thousands of unique descriptions. That's where the AI Product Description Generator comes in. Select a collection or your entire catalog, choose an AI model, set your brand-voice instructions, and generate descriptions — plus titles, meta, tags, and image alt text — in one bulk run. Review the results and publish.
- Good for: filling or rewriting a whole catalog quickly, consistently, and on-brand.
- Bonus: it can generate from product images and auto-generate content for new products as they're imported.
Which should you use?
| Need | Best option |
|---|---|
| Tweak a few descriptions | Built-in bulk editor |
| Bulk find-and-replace | CSV import |
| Write/rewrite many descriptions | AI bulk generation |
For most stores the answer is a mix: generate the bulk of your catalog with AI, then fine-tune standouts in the built-in editor.
