How to Bulk Edit Product Descriptions in Shopify

To update many Shopify product descriptions, use a product CSV when you already have the replacement copy, or a bulk generation app when you need to write new copy. For a few products that need individual attention, work directly in the product editor.

The important distinction is between moving existing text and creating useful new descriptions. Choose your method before you change the catalog.

Shopify's bulk editor documentation explains how to edit supported fields in a grid. Field availability matters; do not assume every rich-text field can be edited there. For description work, use a workflow that explicitly supports the description field.

Make a product export before a large update

Export the products you intend to change and keep an untouched copy. Record which collection or filter selected them. A small export is easier to compare with your proposed changes than a spreadsheet of the entire store.

Shopify documents product exports as a way to back up product data and edit it in a spreadsheet. A product CSV covers product data; it is not a complete backup of your theme, files, and every store setting.

Use CSV when the replacement copy is ready

1. Export the relevant products from Shopify.
2. Make a separate working copy of the file.
3. Edit the description column using the format and headers in your export. Shopify's current reference calls this column Description; older exports may label it Body (HTML).
4. Preserve product identifiers and the columns required by your import. Avoid unrelated changes to variants or options.
5. Import a small test file with the intended overwrite setting, then inspect the result before importing the larger batch.

Read Shopify's current product CSV specification before importing. Included empty columns and dependent variant fields can affect existing data. A spreadsheet workflow helps apply prepared text, but it does not decide what each product description should say.

Use AI when the copy still needs to be written

Review a batch before saving it

Use a short, repeatable check:

• Facts: match dimensions, materials, compatibility, and included items to the product record.
• Claims: remove unsupported guarantees, certifications, delivery promises, and invented benefits.
• Formatting: preview headings and lists on the storefront, especially on mobile.
• Fields: confirm that only the intended description or metadata fields will be replaced.
• Usage: check the credits consumed by the sample before estimating a larger update.

Saving generated content replaces the corresponding product field. New-product automation has separate generation and save choices; review them before enabling it. A history action for eligible records is different from a complete store backup.

Keep future imports consistent

Save the instructions that worked, along with a few representative products you can use to check future changes. If a new supplier provides different information, try a fresh sample instead of assuming the earlier prompt will fit.
