Meta Titles & Meta Descriptions for Shopify Products

1 min read

The meta title and meta description are what shoppers see in Google before they ever reach your store. They don't appear on the product page itself, but they decide whether someone clicks. Most stores ignore them — which is your opportunity.

Where to set them in Shopify

On any product, scroll to Search engine listing and click Edit. You'll find the Page title (meta title) and Meta description fields. Shopify falls back to the product title and description if you leave them blank — but the defaults are rarely optimal.

Meta title

  • Length: around 50–60 characters before Google truncates it.
  • Formula: Primary keyword + key qualifier + brand. Example: "Waterproof Hiking Boots — Vegan Leather | YourStore".
  • Front-load the keyword. Make every title unique.

Meta description

  • Length: around 150–160 characters.
  • Job: earn the click. Lead with the benefit, include the keyword once, and add a reason to choose you (free returns, fast shipping, range).
  • It's not a direct ranking factor, but a higher click-through rate is.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving them as the auto-generated default on every product.
  • Duplicating the same meta description across products.
  • Writing for robots instead of humans — these are ad copy, write them to be clicked.

Generate them in bulk

Writing two good meta fields per product across a catalog is tedious, repetitive work — exactly what to automate. The AI Product Description Generator generates unique, length-aware meta titles and meta descriptions alongside the product description, in bulk, so every product has a complete, click-worthy search listing.
