How to Translate Product Descriptions into Multiple Languages
2 min read · Profitonium Apps · Updated
Product descriptions in your customers' languages can make specifications, care instructions, and buying decisions easier to understand. Plan both the writing and the way each language version will be published in Shopify.
Two approaches
- Translate existing descriptions. Take your current catalog and convert it into each target language.
- Generate in the target language. Draft new descriptions from verified product facts and a brief written for that audience.
The AI Product Description Generator offers 30+ generation languages. Use product facts and language-specific instructions, then review a small sample before extending the workflow across a collection.
Choose the approach based on your source material
Translate when an approved original already contains the right facts and structure. Draft from facts when the original needs substantial rewriting. Neither method guarantees natural phrasing or suitable search terms. Have someone familiar with the language and market check terminology, units, tone, and claims.
Publish the correct language version
Generating copy in another language and publishing a multilingual storefront are separate steps. Check the destination field before saving so you do not replace your default-language description unintentionally.
Shopify documents language publishing and translation workflows in its localization guide, including Translate & Adapt and compatible translation apps. Confirm that the translated copy is stored and published for the intended locale, then inspect that language's actual storefront page.
International SEO basics
- Review the search listing fields too: translate and check the SEO title and meta description as well as the body.
- Use Shopify Markets to serve the right language and currency by region.
- Check language URLs and hreflang after configuring your markets. Shopify describes its automatic handling of hreflang, canonical URLs, and sitemaps in the international SEO documentation.
Keep quality high
Start with representative products, including items with detailed compatibility or care instructions. Ask a fluent reviewer to compare the result with the source facts. Keep approved terminology in your instructions and check formatting on mobile before publishing a larger batch.
